WALT to write a report on whales Whales
Whales are beautiful mammals. There are lots of types of whales like Beluga Whale, Sperm Whale, Blue Whale, Southern Mink Whale, Bottlenose Whale and my favourite whale - Dolphin Whales. There are two distinct groups of whales. One group has no teeth and the other group have teeth
Whales are the biggest mammals in the world. One whale weighs about 30 elephants put together. A calf probably weighs about 13 or 15 elephants put together.
Whales without teeth are called Baleen Whales and they have bristles. Bristles are like the things on tooth brushes. Baleen whales swallow their food and sometimes the birds and fish they eat are still alive in their stomach. And the live bird eats the fish in the whale’s body.
When baby whales are born they stay with their mother. The mother whale gets food for their young. Baby whales are called calves. The calf has to stay with its mother to learn to swim, jump and dive. Calves are very long and they always have to stay with its mother’s side because it’s too young and it might get lost.
Blue whales are longer than the tallest dinosaur. Whales can grow up to 30 metres long. They are the largest creature on Earth. Whales have blowholes for breathing. When whales come up to breath, they blow water up to 10 metres high. Whales can breathe up to an hour under water. They have lungs for breathing.
Sometimes whales get stranded by old age or if they are injured or sick. People try to help the whales and launch them back to the ocean. It takes like 30 people to launch a calf back into the ocean so that means, it will probably take 80 strong people to launch an adult whale.
Whales communicate with each other by making clicking, whistling, thumping or squeaking sounds. When whales go to sleep, their blowhole stays up top so they can breathe while they’re sleeping.
Whales move by moving their tail up and down not side to side. They use their flippers to turn around.
